Blackbeard and Bath, NC

There’s no doubt pirate blood runs through my veins and visiting Bath, NC reaffirmed that for sure. Walking along the streets once inhabited by infamous pirates like Edward Teach, a.k.a. Blackbeard, is an experience every North Carolinian should try out at least once. It’s a quaint little town, believed to be cursed to be small forever, with no commercial development to speak of. So plan to take in the historical sites and enjoy the peaceful tranquility of the old harbor town.

The Bonner House

Situated on the Bath Creek, a tributary of the Pamlico River, The Bonner House sits poised at the mouth of the cape. Within just a few square miles, you have numerous historical houses, with a centrally located visitor’s center. The center is equipped with a quick film about the history of the town, and all of the usual knick-knacks you’d expect to find in a museum environment.

While it’s a worthy spot, expect a more low-key experience. I’d recommend 2-3 hours total to take in the sites. This pirate town is not a destination in itself, so plan to add it into other places of interest. If you enjoy learning more about North Carolina’s early years, and don’t mind guiding yourself around worn-down houses, take a trip out east to roam the streets once populated with paupers and plunderers.
